Taiwan is an affordable country so you don’t need to worry about breaking the bank here. As long as you stick to local cuisine and limit your drinking, it’s hard to spend a lot of money. Here are a few tips to keep your spending in check:
- Skip the taxis – While taxis are still relatively cheap compared to Western standards, these costs add up real quick. We would only opt for taxis if we are trying to save time.
- Skip the High-Speed Rail (HSR) – The HSR is extremely comfortable and fast to get to places, taking you approximately 1.5-2hours from Taipei to Zuoying. But the HSR is very expensive, it’ll cost you about $1500 NT. It’s best to take the regular trains to save yourself some money.
- Embrace Local Cuisine: Western food in Taiwan tends to be pricier and may not match the deliciousness of local dishes. Stick to Taiwanese cuisine to save money and savor authentic flavors.
- Explore the Great Outdoors: Taiwan’s stunning landscapes offer numerous opportunities for hiking, and many parks are easily accessible via public transportation. Best of all, these outdoor adventures are often free of charge.
- Limit drinking alcohol – We know Taiwan has a wild night life, especially for students. But the costs of alcohol in Taiwan are relatively higher due to taxes. A single cocktail in Xinyi District will run you $400 NTD. Be mindful when going out to drink with friends. Pre-gaming at any of the convenient stores are also a great option too.
